Memorial Day 2009 hike to Hualapai Peak at 8am

Join us as we ascend the tallest peak in the county in the glorious Arizona springtime, this Memorial Day. At the top will be hordes of ladybugs, and 100 mile views in all directions. Sometimes even the Flagstaff peaks are visible, 140 miles away...

The Meet:

We'll meet up at 8am at the Gas n' Grub station on Hualapai Mountain Road, .5 mile east of route 66 in central Kingman, then carpool up to the old Flag Mine where the climb starts. The last two miles are on Flag Mine road which is dirt, but can be driven by any decent car with some clearance. Be warned that this maintained road can be very scary with steep dropoffs, but it's not dangerous at slow speeds.

The Hike:

This is the big one, folks. It's a four mile round trip with 1400 feet of vertical climbing and descending. It's not too technical but some agility will be needed. Be prepared for almost continuous climbing or descending with just short stretches of level walking. Total time is usually 4.5 hours, so bring a lunch.

Also bring a big hat and sunscreen, and plenty of water (two liters per person at least). There's very little in the way of bushes so shorts should be okay. Bring leather gloves and poles because the old road we descend can be quite slippery in spots and usually at least one person slips and falls on it.

Finally, be SURE to bring that camera! ;-)

See you there! :-)

Upcoming Daybikes

It's been a long time since I had a serious Mountain Bike Fix and I'm thinking of doing a nice long 13 mile road-loop on the high plateau north of Seligman sometime soon. It's entirely on old ranch roads hovering around 6500 feet in altitude. Advanced trail skills won't be necessary but moderate endurance will.

It starts with a gradual 600 foot vertical climb up a forested canyon road, followed by open riding with vast sightlines, then a fast drop down another canyon with huge ponderosas in patches. Along the way there's a short side route that ends on the edge of a 1200 foot tall, mostly vertical cliff.

After absorbing that superb view the drop continues to a big stock tank, then 200 feet of climbing up another ranch road and back down the starting canyon. The total riding time should be about 4 hours or less, including breaks.

The drive out is about 90 minutes, up Route 66 for an hour plus some very easy dirt driving to the riding location. Any vehicle can make it, even big motorhomes.
